Pa-la translates to father in the Tibetan language. Dressed in his traditional Tibetan attire called chuba with a cloth belt around the waist, hair tied up in a braid with the ornamental red tup-shu around his head, and beaded jewellery, the pa-la mini doll pays homage to the nomadic herdsmen in the vast grasslands of Tibet. Ama-la translates to mother in the Tibetan language. Dressed in her traditional Tibetan dress called chuba and pangden (apron) which is a signifier of her being a married woman, with pearls and a coral around her neck. Turquoise, corals and pearls are the most common precious gems and stones used in Tibetan jewellery. The dolls are handcrafted and serve as an educational tool for children, showcasing Tibetan culture through diverse attire and jewellery. Each piece is handmade with Himalayan sheep wool and fabric scraps. The Tibetan Nomad Dolls are exceptionally well-made by a fair-trade enterprise based in the valley of Dharamshala, in the Northern Indian Himalayas that employs women from the local Tibetan and Indian community. Their aim is to empower the artisans by training them in new skills and creating meaningful, income-generating, and enjoyable work opportunities within a homely and supportive environment. Additionally, they focus on creating a series of high-quality, child-friendly dolls inspired by Tibet’s unique culture. Please note : Due to the use of recycled fabric, there may be a variation in colour.
